CHRISTMAS MARKET TOUR

NOVEMBER 24 THROUGH DECEMBER 4, 2017

Christmas in Germany is a special treat and we'll visit the famous Christmas Markets of Würzburg, Nürnburg, Munich, Salzburg, Rothenburg, and Heidelberg. That's a lot of shopping in 12 days and 10 nights. Obviously, the focus of this tour is shopping but we'll check out a couple of the sights along the way. My name is Fran and I will be your driver and guide.

You'll depart from the USA on Friday. November 24, 2017 and I'll meet you in Frankfurt on Saturday, November 25, 2017. We'll drive 2 hours the first day to Würzburg. Würzburg is located on the Main River in Bavaria. Once we check into our hotel for 2 nights, we will start our shopping extravaganza and visit our first Christmas Market. We'll visit the Kaufhof department store and check out its store window with all its animated Steiff animals. It's sure to bring a smile to your face. In the Christmas Market, we'll sample Gluhwein, hot wine with sugar and spices. Our hotel will be centrally located for easy trips between shopping and our hotel.

Day 3 after a leisure breakfast, we'll check out the magnificiant Prince-Bishop's Residence in Würzburg and the Main River. The Residence was built from 1720 through 1744 and is a beautiful example of German Baroque architecture. Of course, we'll have to walk through the Christmas Market yet another time. The indoor stores are not open on Sunday but its still interesting to window shop. The Christmas Markt will be open.

On day 4 we will drive to Nürnburg. Once we check into our hotel for 3 nights, we will visit the famous Christkindlesmarkt and downtown shopping. Nürnburg has one of Germany's oldest Christmas Markets dating back to the mid 16th century. The market platz is a terrific open air market surrounded by Frauenkirche and many interesting indoor shops. Nürnburg is famous for Lebkucken, a moist, frosted gingerbread biscuit, and Nürnburger Bratwursts.

For Day 5, we will drive over to Rothenburg ob der Tauber for the day. The shops are unique and the walled city is truly a shopping bonanza. The well-preserved buildings in this town date back to the 13th and 15th century. This tiny town will be busy with shoppers from all over the world for a visit to yesteryear. Sampling a "sneeball" is a must. We will return to Nürnburg for the night.

Day 6, we will explore the wall surrounding the old city of Nürnburg, check out the castle Kaiserburg, and again visit the Christmas Market and shops. If we are lucky, we will catch a glimpse of the Christmas Angel.

Day 7 will send us on our way to Munich which is about a 2 hour drive. Once we check into our hotel for 3 nights, we will head for the Christmas Market located in old town at the Marienplatz around the famous Rathaus and Glückundspiel. This is the location of an enormous decorated Christmas tree.

Day 8 will find us checking out the local shopping and having a snack at the famous Hofbrau Haus. We'll marvel at the Glückundspiel which chimes and dances at noon each day.

On day 9 we will drive over to Salzburg, Austria which is about a 2 hour drive. The drive is picturesque as we'll see the German Alps and Lake Chiemsee. Old town has beautiful store signs and the walking streets are truly interesting. The river really is green. We'll return to Munich for the night.

Day 10 will find us driving to Heidelberg for our last 2 nights in Germany. This is Sunday so again the indoor shops will be closed but the outdoor Market will be open.

On Day 11 we will visit the Christmas Market in the morning and stroll through old town. In the afternoon we will visit the beautiful red castle high above Heidelberg and see the largest wine barrel in the world complete with a dance floor on top. The view is breathtaking from the castle down to the city below.

On day 12 December 5, 2017 we have to say "Auf Weidersehn" to Germany and head back to the airport in Frankfurt.

We have a great deal of shopping and sight-seeing planned. I'm getting excited just thinking about it. I'm already thinking about how few clothes I can pack to save room in my suitcase for my "treasures".

All the hotels we will stay at will be 3 stars or above so each room will have its own bathroom. All hotels will have an elevator and the reception staff will speak English. A scrumpous breakfast buffet is included each day.

Included in the costs of this trip is transportation to and from the airport in Germany, 10 nights accommendations with breakfast buffets, all ground transportation in Germany and entrance fees for scheduled sightseeing. Not included are lunches, snacks, dinners, and alcohol. Of course, shopping is at your expense. Airfare costs are not included but available through Travel Germany or you may book your own. You will need to arrive before noon on November 25, 2017.

The price for 12 days and 10 nights is $3095 based on double occoupancy with an additional $500 for single rate.

Just a note of reminder that Germany and Austria do not necessarily have handicapped facilites available. There is a great deal of walking involved with this trip and we all need to be in good physical condition. Sturdy walking shoes and warm clothes are a must. The weather will be cool and damp at this time of year so we need to be prepared. Plan on layering your clothes. Hats and mittens are a must.
